The winner, Francis Clauson’s Ultra Low Energy House, Kiltilly, Co. Wexford, is a passive house residential new build project submitted by Winkens Architecture & Integrated Energy. Achieving a space heat demand of just 13.4 kWh/m2.a & airtightness result of 0.58 m3/h.m2, this project demonstrated that a low energy house could be built in the traditional style within tight planning retraints on form and height of residential constructions, and achieve passive house certification. This innovative project, also involving, Gr8 Developments, was designed to achieve the highest possible levels of thermal comfort and energy efficiency, and ensure an Air tightness strategy was developed along with a continuous insulation wrap to help create a thermal bridge free construction. Incorporating photovoltaic array panels combined with a heat pump to supply low temperature underfloor heating.
Home-owners Francis and Brigid Clauson were driving forces behind their building team. Alan Tier of Integrated Energy stated that ‘As the energy and thermal bridge consultant on the project, I found it a most interesting and challenging undertaking, my input was made easy by the enthusiasm, hands on approach and willingness to learn shown by the Clients, Francis and Brigid.’ In relation to the innovation on the project he stated that ‘The clients were early adopters of new techniques and approaches …. they put their trust in new scientific approaches to construction technology, resulting in a building which is not only an energy efficient, energy producing machine for living, it is also a bright, fresh, healthy and happy home.’
ISOVER High Performance Duct Wrap was used to provide high levels of thermal and acoustic insulation to MHRV ducts throughout the house and Metac high performance insulation in the ceiling.
Runners Up were Green Extension Architects for home-owner Liam Desmonds A2 rated renovation in Stillorgan Co Dublin, and Glenashling Nursing Home, in Celbridge - the first Passive Certified nursing home in Ireland, realised for owners Gary and Norma Gavigan, by Integrated Energy and The Clarke Partnership.
In relation to the construction industry in Ireland and drive towards more energy efficient buildings Brian Dolan remarked that there was a ‘… sense of optimism in the room and I do think we have turned the corner in Ireland, so we all need to stay positive and build on the emerging green shoots of growth’
The ISOVER Energy Efficiency Awards are a global initiative across ISOVER Worldwide – ISOVER Ireland have been awarded the honour of hosting the next grand final in Dublin in 2014, to which all of our Irish winners will be showcased.
